What if Vaccines Were Made from the Bodies of Dead Bishops?

Imagine a world, not so different from our own, wherein body parts were used to create life-saving medicines. Unlike our world, however, it was not from pre-born babies that the organs were harvested, but instead it was from the bodies of religious elders.

This world, which we might call “Terra Nova”, had long since discarded the barbaric practice of using fetal tissue for its vaccines and other treatments. Thankfully, Terra Nova had been drawn back from the brink of destruction wrought by the cult of Scientism, mainly to the efforts of a religious group known as The Truth. Among other immoral practices, the noble men of The Truth succeeded in having abortion and its concomitant industries prohibited.

Cultural change among the people of Terra Nova was a little slower in coming, and many held on to the deceptions of the Age of Lies. Swathes of Terra Novian society were still attached to comfort and ease, and eschewed the ascetic ways of The Truth. The medical fraternity which had once dominated Terra Nova, remained fairly influential, and without much difficulty induced a large part of the population to accept its latest innovations, aimed at reducing suffering and enhancing lifestyles.

One novel discovery that is pertinent to our survey of Terra Nova involved the use of adult tissue in the development of medical treatments, particularly for use in the vaccines which promised to rid their world of inconvenient illnesses such as the common cold. Terra Nova’s advanced technologists had detected a unique serum in the tissue of certain males which was ideal for the creation of vaccines: these men were the elders of The Truth, who were known as ‘Bishops.’ It was found that during their consecration ritual, the Bishops underwent a physical, as well as an ontological change, which left them with enhanced organs. The pool of bishops promised to be a rich supply of this special serum which promised to reinvigorate Terra Nova’s pharmaceutical industry.

It didn't take long for rumors of the reality of serum-extraction to circulate: underground media personalities reported that the operation involved dismemberment, organ extraction and death - in that order.

It all sounded too good to be true: all it took was a willing donor and with a simple procedure, a beneficial outcome was assured. The majority of the citizens of Terra Nova, although slightly repulsed at the thought of their vaccines and other medicines being made with human tissue, comforted themselves with thoughts of efficiency, expediency and The Greater Good. Thus there was initially no opposition to the practice due to demand from a society which still tended towards worship of science and which had not yet learned to embrace suffering. Terra Nova’s burgeoning pharmaceutical industry even went on to find more and varied products for which the remarkable serum could be used.

At first, the innovation was overwhelmingly successful: the more worldly Bishops were especially attracted to the celebrity status that went with being a voluntary organ-donor. Prior to the harvesting procedure, the Bishops were paraded before Terra Nova’s elites to be wined and dined. They were lauded by the media, and often received community awards for their selfless act of tissue donation. But what that first unfortunate crop of Bishops didn’t understand - as it had not been pointed out to them - was that there was no coming back from the procedure. In giving their valuable tissue, they would also be giving their lives.

It didn't take long for rumors of the reality of serum-extraction to circulate: underground media personalities reported that the operation involved dismemberment, organ extraction and death - in that order. There was no anesthetic provided, as that would have inhibited production of the vital serum. The suddenly less-than-willing victim was strapped to a table and dissected alive. There was no proper burial afterwards, either: the Bishops’ discarded body parts were gathered together and hauled off to an incinerator then unceremoniously burned en masse.

As time went by, and Bishops began rapidly disappearing, questions began to be asked by thoughtful observers. The reality of the practice of serum-harvesting was being leaked by the medical assistants and cleaners who were abhorred by what they were witnessing. Rumblings of dissent, although first labeled as extremism by the authorities, began to exert influence on the levers of power.

The devoted members of The Truth swung into action. The Bishops themselves began to speak out against the horrific practice of forced organ-harvesting, with some of the holier ones even sacrificing their lives in order to buy their confreres some time to react.

Priests, the ever-faithful spiritual sons of the Bishops, heroically stood up to the authorities,  educating their congregations about the supernatural value of suffering and warning them not to accept the bishop-tainted vaccines.

The clerics began to eloquently explain the principles of ethics to their confused flocks: the fundamentals about human dignity, freedom and consent, intrinsic evil, remote and proximate complicity. Priests, the ever-faithful spiritual sons of the Bishops, heroically stood up to the authorities,  educating their congregations about the supernatural value of suffering and warning them not to accept the bishop-tainted vaccines. Lay-groups rallied against the desecration of the Bishops’ bodies and the failure of the authorities to provide any form of burial ritual. Even secular human rights groups initiated campaigns which focused on the lack of informed consent by the victims and the inhumane retrieval process. Terra Nova’s mass media amplified the message, focusing on the issue of theft of the Bishops’ body parts and the fact that no restitution could ever be made to the victims. Groups approached the governing bodies and demanded that they fund ethically-produced vaccines instead of immoral ones.

The enormous pushback against the use of bishop-derived medical treatments was both co-ordinated and sustained. Ultimately, it was extremely successful. The practice of deriving medical treatments from the Bishops was finally outlawed and relegated to the somewhat shameful annals of Terra Nova’s history.

Back on poor old planet Earth, however, things are not so rosy. While our Catholic bishops are safe from being turned into vaccines, they are not safe from the eternal consequences of promoting abortion-tainted medical treatments. Just as it is all-too-easy to spend someone else’s money, so it can be effortless to mandate the use of someone else’s organs for tissue harvesting - particularly when the ‘someone else’ can’t complain about it. May the good Bishops of Terra Nova be an example to ours in showing that ends do not justify the means and that human beings were never intended to be the playthings of mad scientists.
