Canadian court rules Jordan Peterson must undergo "social media sensitivity training"

TORONTO, Ontario (TND) ABCNews — Psychologist and media personality Jordan Peterson must submit to specialized training on social media sensitivity, a Canadian court ruled Wednesday.

The training, a coaching program on professionalism in public statements, was mandated by the College of Psychologists of Ontario in 2022 after it received complaints tied to Peterson’s aggressive use of social media, something the organization saw as professional misconduct. Peterson then filed for a judicial review, arguing he was entitled to make such statements.

Three Divisional Court judges, however, ruled that the organization was allowed to make such demands of Peterson because it did so in the public best interest.

The order is not disciplinary and does not prevent Dr. Peterson from expressing himself on controversial topics; it has a minimal impact on his right to freedom of expression," the decision, written by Justice Paul Schabas, reads in part.

Peterson took to X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, to lambast the judges.

“So the Ontario Court of Appral ruled that @CPOntariocan pursue their prosecution,” he wrote. “If you think that you have a right to free speech in Canada You're delusional. I will make every aspect of this public And we will see what happens when utter transparency is the rule Bring it on.”

Some sided with Peterson, questioning the integrity of the College of Psychologists. Other commenters, however, felt the ruling was justified.
