As the United States (US) prepares for a presidential transition from the disastrous Joe Biden regime to a new administration under president elect Donald Trump, Hungary can look forward to warmer ties with its North American counterpart.
After all, as per “long-standing custom”, as the Hungarian Conservative puts it, David Pressman, who, as America’s current ambassador to Hungary, (but who as acted more of a partisanal ideologue and activist for cultural Marxism rather than his assigned role as a diplomat) has officially announced his departure from his post.
Nominated under the woke Biden regime in 2022, Pressman’s sojourn in Hungary has been characterized by his outspoken opposition of Hungary’s conservative government under Prime Minister Viktor Mihály Orbán.
Openly homosexual, Pressman has frequently criticized Hungary’s domestic affairs, including decrying the Orbán government’s protection of traditional family values from LGBTQ+ ideologies. Pressman joins Budapest Pride march to protest Hungary’s anti-LGBTQ+ laws
For instance, Pressman took umbrage that Hungarians defined marriage in their constitution as “the union of a man and a woman”. Also, the LGBTQ+ activist was the agent provocateur of a joint statement denouncing Hungary’s traditional views on homosexuality and other non-conventional relations. This joint statement “stress[ed] the need for leaders and governments, [in Hungary] and elsewhere, to show respect for and protect the rights of LGBTQI+ individuals and communities, and to eliminate laws and policies that discriminate against them.”
Moreover, Pressman has also lambasted Hungary’s insistence on maintaining national sovereignty in wake of the European Union (EU)’s propensity to meddle in its domestic politics, and at Orbán’s pragmatic and pro-peace stance towards the Russo-Ukrainian conflict
Moreover, Pressman has also lambasted Hungary’s insistence on maintaining national sovereignty in wake of the European Union (EU)’s propensity to meddle in its domestic politics, including its promotion of pro-family values.
Furthermore, Pressman has lashed out at Orbán’s pragmatic and pro-peace stance towards the Russo-Ukrainian conflict (now in its third year with no signs of abating as of yet). Pressman, criticized the Hungarian leader of focusing on business opportunities instead of Ukraine. It seems that Pressman has not been well educated about Hungary’s historical links to Transcarpathia, located in the west of Ukraine, thus explaining Budapest’s ban on weapons passing through its border to safeguard ethnic Hungarians there from Russian retaliation.
Rather than acting as a diplomat should (such as fostering friendly bilateral or multilateral ties), Pressman spearheaded a billboard campaign castigating Russians as the enemy of the Hungarian people. What is more, Pressman even tried to compare the resistance of Hungarian freedom fighters of 1956 to Soviet oppression to the Russo-Ukrainian conflict, hinting that the US would help the Hungarians ward off the Russians in the case of the current Russo-Ukrainian conflict.
The Public Foundation of Freedom Fighters urged the US Embassy in Hungary to “immediately and permanently cease its daily actions that violate and seek to influence Hungary’s independent political ability to act.”
In response, the Public Foundation of Freedom Fighters, the umbrella organization of the veterans of the 1956 Hungarian revolution, urged the US Embassy in Hungary to “immediately and permanently cease its daily actions that violate and seek to influence Hungary’s independent political ability to act.”
During an interview with Hungarian media after a visit to the US, Orbán hailed Trump as “a man of peace”.
“He won’t give a penny to the Ukrainian-Russian war. This is why the war will end, because it’s obvious that Ukraine cannot stand on its own two feet,” Orbán stated, in remarks cited by leftist news outlet The Guardian.
Ironically, Pressman himself faced scrutiny for allegedly profiting after offering legal advice to Ellen Pinchuk, the primary American consultant to the Russian mineral oligarch and politician Mikhail Prokhorov. Notably, Prokhorov is reportedly a close Kremlin ally who has successfully dodged Western sanctions despite opposition from the Kyiv regime. (Talk about being hypocritical!)
Strikingly, Viktor Orbán’s political director, Balázs Orbán, fulminated against Pressman’s hypocritical criticisms of Hungary for doing business with Russia, noting America’s increased dependence on Russian nuclear fuel.
American-Hungarian relations have nose-dived to historic lows during Pressman’s stint as US ambassador.
Additionally, Pressman has championed visa sanctions against Hungarians to penalize Budapest for its refusal to kowtow to the liberal West’s policies against Russia in Moscow’s conflict with Kyiv. the ruling Fidesz government’s stance on Ukraine, with the ambassador regularly accused of grossly politicising his role in the pursuit of progressive causes.
Before the 2024 US presidential elections, Biden also falsely accused Orbán of wanting a “dictatorship”. (In context, the nationalist Fidesz party of Orbán has won four democratic elections consecutively, something that dictatorships do not cater for.)
Biden’s statements unsurprisingly prompted a sharp response from Hungary’s foreign minister, Péter Sziijártó, who stated:
“We are not obliged to put up with such lies from anyone, even if that person happens to be the President of the United States.”
Besides, Szijjártó slammed Pressman’s presence in Hungary and his critical remarks about the Hungarian government as akin to an “oppositional, liberal mission” instead of a force to elevate bilateral American-Hungarian ties.
Arguably, American-Hungarian relations have nose-dived to historic lows during Pressman’s stint as US ambassador.
With Biden in his twilight weeks as leader of the US, and Trump set to take charge of the White House, it seems that Hungarians themselves cannot wait to get rid of Pressman as soon as possible. Speculation is already rife as to who would be the next American ambassador to Hungary, with Bryan Leib, Senior Fellow at the Budapest-based conservative think tank, the Center for Fundamental Rights, as a possible nominee.
In an interview with The European Conservative, Leib had this to say about Pressman:
“Pressman’s behavior has been beyond unprofessional and as an American, he has disgraced us. Please allow me to apologize on behalf of the American people for his outlandish behavior. He has been an activist, not a diplomat. His job is to represent American interests and strengthen ties, not to lecture Hungary on how to govern its people. Hungary has every right to protect its borders and uphold its culture, and it doesn’t need an ambassador to micromanage its decisions. Ambassadors should be building bridges, not pushing ideological agendas. Hungary deserves an ambassador who respects its sovereignty and its right to chart its own path. There is no possibility that President-elect Trump will retain Pressman in Budapest. Pressman should start packing his bags. I firmly believe that the people and government of Hungary deserve someone in the ambassador position who respects their sovereignty, culture, and the principles that make Hungary strong. If called to serve by President-elect Trump to be his envoy in Budapest, I’d be honored to work toward strengthening the US-Hungary relationship in a way that’s based on mutual respect and shared values. Right now, my focus remains on supporting President-elect Trump, the transition team, and advancing our America First agenda. One thing is for sure; with President-elect Trump heading back to the White House, the restoration of strong ties between Washington D.C. and Budapest is only weeks away!”
It appears that Pressman will not be sorely missed in Hungary, if at all.
