RTV: St. Scholastica, Feb. 10

St. Scholastica was the sister of St. Benedict and the foundress of the women's branch of Benedictine Monasticism. Almost everything we know about her comes from St. Gregory the great. She was born in the year 480 in Umbria in Italy to wealthy parents. From her earliest years she is said to have consecrated her life to God.

When St. Benedict founded the famous monastery of Monte Cassino, she established a convent about five miles away. She visited her brother once a year, but because women were not allowed to visit the monastery, she met him at a house about halfway.

On one occasion, when they had conversed about spiritual matters until late in the day, St. Scholastica asked St. Benedict to spend the night. Not wishing to break his own monastic rule of always staying in his cell, he said no.  But then St. Scholastica prayed that he might stay, and suddenly a great thunderstorm came and St. Benedict was compelled to remain.

They spent the night discussing spiritual matters, in a similar manner as St. Augustine and St. Monica had once done at Ostia. He left the next morning, and three days later she died. St. Benedict was granted a miraculous vision where he saw the soul of his sister ascending into heaven in the form of a white dove. He had her body buried in the tomb he had prepared for himself.

Interestingly, even the modern world pays tribute to St. Benedict and St. Scholastica, on this 50 Euro Austrian commemorative gold coin.
