RTV Covers Vatican Sex Abuse Summit in Rome
Remnant TV was in Rome this past week covering the Vatican’s clerical sexual abuse summit on the “protection of minors”. It seemed a dismal assignment, to be sure, but the reason it was necessary for The Remnant to be in the Eternal City was so we could throw in with our traditional Catholic allies in Rome who’d organized an act of formal resistance to the Vatican sham summit.
Going in, we all knew that the ultimate goal of the summit was to establish child abuse—not rampant homosexuality in the priesthood—as the main cause of a crisis in the Catholic Church which now rivals that of the Protestant Revolt. (Remnant TV coverage of this event as well as the Vatican summit itself, can be found on The Remnant’s YouTube channel, and for your convenience is laid out below:

Fr. Lawrence Carney is chaplain to a traditional order of nuns, the Benedictines of Mary, Queen of Apostles, in Gower, Missouri. He visits the community daily to celebrate the traditional Latin Mass, hear confession and offer spiritual guidance. Then he takes to the inner-city streets of St. Joseph in his cassock and wide-brimmed hat to pray the rosary and be a visible presence of Christ and his Church. He has encountered many lost souls on his walks, and successfully brought them back to the Faith. “It’s what Our Lord did,” he reasons. “Many people see me and are moved to come up to me and talk.”
Fr. Carney had the idea to do this after going on the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage in his cassock, and was approached by an estimated 1,000 souls during his 32-day trek. He has continued this unique method of evangelization for over three years in America, and has finally received permission to establish an order to expand the ministry.

Father Lawrence Carney announced in an email (January 23) that after four years of prayer, he has been approved on December 8 to accept men into the Canons Regular of St. Martin of Tours. The new community is based in Saint Joseph, Missouri, in the diocese of Kansas City-St Joseph.

REMNANT COMMENT: This is great news indeed, if not particularly surprising. Over the years I've had many opportunities to walk down streets on both sides of the Atlantic in the company of priests in cassocks, and my reaction to this has always been the same: Mother Church surely knew what she was doing when she dressed her sons in a way that made them stand out wherever they went, anywhere on earth.
Priests of the old world were visible to the whole world, wherever they went. They never really "punched out." And neither did they go into the world incognito, as is the case so often today. They made themselves approachable by being always willing to "stick out" and stay "on the clock," ready to serve souls.
I can't tell you how many times over the years I've seen native kids in Mexico, tourists in France, hikers in Spain, commuters in European metros, wanderers and street urchins approach my priest friends or Remnant Tours chaplains, asking for everything from a simple blessing to forgiveness for their sins. Especially in airports. So often, just before a flight is scheduled to take off, a young man will approach the cassocked priest and ask him to hear his confession. It’s such a beautiful thing. Real missionaries of mercy in action, in every traditional priest, all over the world.
What sort of demonic mind conceived of the notion to strip away the identifying habit--the calling card, if you will--of the Catholic priest, thus robbing us all of this visual reminder that God is with us and that His mercy is right there for the asking, sitting in the next train seat down, in fact.
Reminds me of the famous conversion story of Sir Alex Guinness—the outstanding English actor who played Obi-Wan Kenobi in Star Wars (among other far greater but lesser known roles). He was in France making the film adaptation of G. K. Chesterton’s crime-solving priest, Father Brown. And as he was playing a Catholic priest he was naturally dressed like one, which in those days meant black cassock and clerical beaver hat.
At one point he was taking a walk between shoots but still in costume. He cut through some bushes and then down onto a little lane, where he surprised a local lad making his way home.
Rather than showing any sign of fear at the sudden appearance of the big black-cassocked man, however, the boy trotted eagerly right up to the "priest", took him by the hand and began chatting as they walked down the lane together. In an instant, priest and boy had become father and son.
That demonstration of immediate trust and genuine affection for the figure of the Catholic priest in those days made a deep and lasting impression on Sir Alex Guinness, and in fact helped set him on the road to his eventual conversion to the Catholic Faith. In his autobiography, Guinness notes:
“Continuing my walk, I reflected that a Church that could inspire such confidence in a child, making priests, even when unknown, so easily approachable, could not be as scheming or as creepy as so often made out. I began to shake off my long-taught, long-absorbed prejudices.”
That was a long time ago—long before Vatican II and the disastrous demotion of the Catholic priest to "regular guy". It was back when priests were proud to dress the part, on and off the Altar of Sacrifice. After that Altar had been transformed into a table, and the Mass became a Meal -- well, I guess priests decided that if there was no sacrifice anymore there's no real need for priests, either. And so many of them became more or less administrators, and dressed accordingly.
Praise God, Father Carney and so many young priests today are moving back in the right direction where the priesthood is concerned. And this is yet another reason for us to not lose hope and to always keep in mind that the Church is human and divine; the human element is rather in shambles right now, admittedly, but the same cannot be said of the divine element. God will save His Church in His time. And the Father Carney’s out there give us all hope that this will happen sooner rather than later.
Missouri's 'Walking Priest' Starts New Religious Community Featured

On Monday Pope Francis released a new apostolic constitution calling for a “radical” reform to the nature and curriculum of ecclesiastical universities and institutions.
“The primary need today is for the whole People of God to be ready to embark upon a new stage of Spirit-filled evangelization,” the Pope said in the document, “Vertatis Gaudium.”
This new stage of evangelization, he said, “calls for a resolute process of discernment, purification and reform. In this process, a fitting renewal of the system of ecclesiastical studies plays a strategic role.”
Signed Dec. 8, 2017, and published Jan. 29, 2018, the 87-page document is Francis' is titled “Veritatis Gaudium,” meaning “the joy of truth.”
The document deals specifically with ecclesiastical universities and faculties, which, differing from regular Catholic universities, offer Vatican-approved degrees required to teach in seminaries or at pontifical universities.
It consists of two parts dedicated to general norms and specific norms, and also contains an appendix and norms of application. The document is meant to “update” previous norms, and abrogates any prior rules which contradict the new ones laid out by Pope Francis in Veritatis Gaudium.
The document abrogates any contrary norms established by John Paul II's 1979 Apostolic Constitution “Sapientia Christiana,” issued after a careful study of the Second Vatican Council's decree “Optatam Totius” on ecclesiastical studies. However, John Paul II's 1990 Apostolic Constitution “Ex corde Ecclesiae” is not impacted , as it deals specifically with Catholic colleges and universities, rather than ecclesiastical academic entities.
...Francis noted that the world is currently living not only a time of change, but it is also experiencing “a true epochal shift, marked by a wide-ranging anthropological and environmental crisis,” such as natural, social and financial disasters which are swiftly reaching “a breaking point.” READ MORE HERE
REMNANT COMMENT: Francis is now injecting his erroneous and harmful personal views on the environment, as well as other errors, info official curricula for pontifical universities; trying to cement the rot for generations to come. Anyone who doubts global warming will not be fit to teach at a pontifical university?

Given the volatile political climate at present, we really wonder how many other priests in America would have the courage to give this sermon. Many, we hope and pray.

In a troubling new open letter to the media, the redoubtable Cardinal Joseph Zen, China’s highest ranking Catholic prelate, has accused the Vatican of “selling out” the Church by caving in to demands of the Communist leaders.
Sparking the cardinal’s declarations Monday were recent reports of the Vatican asking two Chinese bishops faithful to Rome to resign their posts in order to make way for new bishops of the Patriotic Association, the surrogate Catholic Church in China subject to the Communist party.
Cardinal Zen said he was able to independently verify those reports. The problem, Zen writes, “is not the resignation of the legitimate Bishops, but the request to make place for the illegitimate and even excommunicated ones.”
A Vatican document of 1988 barred Roman Catholics from participating in the sacraments of the Patriotic Church, since the association “had broken all relationships with the pope” and would be “under the direct control of the government.”
In his letter titled “Dear friends in the media,” Cardinal Zen recounts a recent meeting with Pope Francis in the Vatican, in which the pontiff assured him that they would not “create another Mindszenty case,” referring to the heroic Cardinal Archbishop of Budapest, who was imprisoned by the Communists and subsequently replaced by the Vatican with a successor more to the likings of the Communist government. REMNANT COMMENT: The God of Surprises strikes again. We're to the point now where it's hats off to Francis for at least being true to his world. He said he was going to permanently change the Church (read: destroy it) in such a way that it could never be changed back, and that's exactly what he's doing.
One wonders what the orthodox cardinals and bishops are waiting for. Are they ever going to stand up and stop this man? Cardinal Burke, for example, where is his "formal correction"? And for that matter, what's with the Society of St. Pius X? Anybody heard from them lately? Isn't it time for a J'accuse le Pape or perhaps another Letter to Confused Catholics?
God help us, how much worse does this have to get before the Catholic world rises up en masse and demands this papal dictator either cease and desist, or step down?

Editor’s Note: The following letter was penned by a captain in the U.S. Army who wishes to remain anonymous, but who has identified himself to me privately. I believe his humble and stirring letter is very important especially as Lent approaches. MJM
I have recently been listening to a wonderful collection of sermons by a priest. He belonged to a fraternal order which I shall not name because, no doubt, some would not listen, but many will probably figure it out. I cannot help but feel that this was in some way inspired, that I should happen to listen to these sermons leading up to the blessed season of Lent.
This month has been quite a spectacle, even for this pontificate; an apparently unending stream of outrages and embarrassments, with the pope and his Vatican media support jumping from one scandal to the next. But among secular reporters the sex abuse issue trumps all others and the fallout continues to blaze down on the Bergoglian pontificate in response to his amazing accusation earlier this month that victims of sexual abuse by clergy were engaging in “calumny,” in their accusations against a Chilean bishop, Juan de la Cruz Barros Madrid.
The incident was brief: on the Thursday of the pope’s week-long South American trip, in response to an impromptu question tossed out by a Chilean reporter, the pope responded in what one reporter described as a “snippy tone”: “The day I see proof against Bishop Barros, then I will talk. There is not a single piece of evidence against him. It is all calumny. Is that clear?”

Prior to a reorganization announced in 2011 by Cardinal Gérald Cyprien Lacroix, the Archdiocese of Quebec had 216 parishes. On January 1, the number of parishes serving these 216 “local communities” was reduced from 130 to 64. In 2020, the number of parishes will fall to 37.

St. Marie de l’Incarnation, Mother of Quebec
The arrival of the Ursulines in Quebec, 1639
One rarely comes across a person with more true grit than St. Marie of the Incarnation. Not only was she the most significant missionary leader to establish the Ursuline Convent in Quebec, she was also a mother and a skillful entrepreneur.
She was christened as Marie Guyart in Tours, France in 1599. She was the fourth of Florent Guyart and Jeanne Michelet's eight children. When Marie was seven years old, she experienced her first vision of Jesus Christ. In her book Relation of 1654, she recounted: "With my eyes toward heaven, I saw our Lord Jesus Christ in human form come forth and move through the air to me. As Jesus in his wondrous majesty was approaching me, I felt my heart enveloped by his love and I began to extend my arms to embrace him. Then he put his arms about me, kissed me lovingly, and said, 'Do you wish to belong to me?' I answered, 'Yes!' And having received my consent, he ascended back into Heaven." From that point onward, Marie felt "inclined towards goodness."
Intent on belonging to Christ, Marie, at fourteen years of age, proposed to her parents that she enter religious life with the Benedictines of Beaumont Abbey, but her parents disregarded her desire. Instead, she was married to Claude Martin, a master silk worker in 1617. By her own account, she enjoyed a happy - although brief - marriage and within two years she had a son, also named Claude. Her husband died only months after the birth of their son, leaving Marie a widow at the age of nineteen.
With her husband's death, Marie inherited his failing business which she then lost. Forced to move into her parent's home, Marie secluded herself to pursue a deepening of her commitment to spiritual growth. After a year with her parents, Guyart was invited to move in with her sister and brother-in-law, Paul Buisson, who owned a successful transportation business. She accepted, and helped in managing their house and kitchen.
Turns out she had a knack for business, and not only did she make the silk merchant business profitable, but from there she went on to run her brother-in-law’s transport company. She took care of everything: the inventory of goods, the drivers, even the 60 horses.
But nothing, not even worldly success and acclaim, could distract Marie from the pursuit of a spiritual life. Finally, free to pursue her religious inclinations, Marie took vows of chastity, obedience and poverty. On 24 March 1620, she received a vision that inflamed and renewed her ardent desire for the habit. "I was constantly occupied by my intense concentration on God," she wrote in 1633. In 1631, after working with a spiritual director for many years, Guyart decided to enter the Ursuline monastery in Tours to test her religious vocation, at which time she received the religious name of Marie of Incarnation, by which she is now known.
Joining the monastery required her to leave her adolescent son. This was the most difficult decision of her life, but she accomplished the separation only because she firmly believed that it was the will of God. Young Claude did not respond with such resignation. He attempted to storm the monastery with a band of school friends, and could repeatedly be found crying at the gates, trying to enter. She left him in the care of the Buisson family, but the emotional pain of the separation would remain with them both. Her heart and prayers reached out toward him all her life, and her constant petitions to God affected a strong zeal for souls in the boy himself; he grew up to become a Benedictine monk. In later years they corresponded candidly about their spiritual and emotional trials.
Marie experienced a vision that would inspire her voyage to the New World. She saw herself walking hand in hand with a laywoman against the backdrop of a foreign landscape; on the roof of a small church in this distant, foggy landscape sat the Virgin Mary and Jesus. In Relation of 1654 she wrote, "I saw at some distance to my left [in] a little church of white marble...the Blessed Virgin was seated. She was holding the Child Jesus on her lap. This place was elevated, and below it lay a majestic and vast country, full of mountains, of valleys, of thick mists which permeated everything except the church...The Blessed Virgin, Mother of God, looked down on this country, as pitiable as it was awesome...it seemed to me that she spoke about this country and about myself and that she had in mind some plan which involved me."
With the assistance of her spiritual director, Marie identified the country to be Canada and became convinced that her vocation was to help establish the Faith in the New World. Marie’s initial financial concerns for the funding of the journey and the establishment of a convent in New France were resolved when she was introduced to Madeleine de la Peltrie. Marie recognized that this devout widow, the daughter of a fiscal officer, was the laywoman from her vision. De la Peltrie’s contribution to the endeavor was met with strong opposition from her aristocratic family. To garner their support, de la Peltrie went so far as to arrange a sham marriage with a Christian man, Jean de Brenière. Madeleine's new marital status gave her the legal authority to sign over the bulk of her estate to the Ursuline Order, thereby fully funding the mission.
The spiritual daughters of St. Marie, a few years before Vatican II
On May 4, 1639, Marie de l’Incarnation and her intrepid new friend, Madeleine de la Peltrie, set sail from Dieppe for Quebec on board the Saint Joseph. They were accompanied by a fellow aristocratic Ursuline Marie de Sanonières, the young commoner Charlotte Barré, three nurses, and two Jesuit Fathers.
Despite never achieving martyrdom, Marie spent many years in the New World aspiring towards it, working diligently in the meantime. She was one of the first female missionaries in the New World, and the first superior of the Ursulines in Canada. The routine of everyday life was organized in the little house lent by a friend. It consisted of two rooms and a leaky roof. Little Indian girls flocked to the convent in such great numbers that it was thought necessary to build a monastery in 1641. Setbacks could have discouraged this little community, but the management strength of Mother Marie kept the community going. Not only did the sisters teach the young Indian girls, but they also washed, dressed and fed them free of charge. To teach the girls more effectively, Mother Marie learned the Algonquin, Huron and Iroquois languages and wrote dictionaries and catechisms for her students. Slowly but surely the number of sisters grew as they received new vocations.
Then fire destroyed the convent, and in a few hours the sisters’ work of nearly ten years was destroyed. Mother Marie and the sisters decided to not leave the area and to build again. She wrote, “We are in the dark here, and we must grope around for our way. We consult wise persons, but things do not turn out as foreseen. We roll along, however, and when we think we are at the bottom of the precipice, we find ourselves standing upright.”
Back in France, Marie’s son Claude became a Benedictine monk in 1641. He was eventually elected prior, assistant, definer and president of the General Chapter of his Order. For 30 years he kept up regular correspondence with his mother in Canada. This son was the first to write a biography of his mother, and in the foreword, the Bishop of Quebec wrote:
“Having chosen her to establish the Ursulines in Canada, God gave her the full spirit of her Institute. She was a perfect superior, an excellent Mistress of novices, capable of undertaking any religious enterprise. Her exterior life, simple and well-disciplined, was animated by an intense interior life, so that she was a living Rule for all her Community. Her zeal for the salvation of souls, and especially for the conversion of the Indians, was great and so universal that she seemed to carry them all in her heart. We cannot doubt that, by her prayers, she greatly called down God’s many blessings upon this new-born Church.”
Marie died of a liver illness on April 30, 1672. In the necrology report sent to the Ursulines of France, it was written: "The numerous and specific virtues and excellent qualities which shone through this dear deceased, make us firmly believe that she enjoys a high status in God's glory."
Her powerful intercession can be sought at any time, but especially on her feast day, April 30th.

VATICAN II UPDATE: Number of Quebec Parishes to Plummet

Over fifty thousand Polish Catholics have already supported an initiative of Polonia Semper Fidelis – and the number of signatories of its petition to the President of the Polish Bishops’ Conference is still increasing! It is still possible to join the circle of defenders of Christ’s teaching.
…Liberal interpretations of the Pope’s document caused quite a stir in the Church. For example, German bishops stated that divorcees living in new, nonsacramental relationships can receive Holy Communion. However, such a position is in breach of the existing teachings of the Church and violates the sixth commandment!
…The campaign launched by Polonia Semper Fidelis is a consequence of liberal interpretations of the apostolic exhortation Amoris Laetitia that appeared in some countries. Some solutions adopted e.g. in Germany allow people living in the state of mortal sin to receive Holy Communion without the necessity of changing their lives and going to confession. According to the constant teaching of the Church receiving the Holy Eucharist this way is sacrilegious and thus another very grave sin.
…In order not to spread the German errors in the Church in Poland the faithful ask their Polish bishops to confirm the Catholic doctrine on the indissolubility of marriage. The letter addressed to President of the Polish Bishops’ Conference Abp. Stanisław Gądecki has already been signed by over 54 000 Polish people.
…Polish bishops took a firm position during synods devoted to a family and bravely stood up for the teachings of the Church and the spiritual heritage of the Polish Pope. We expect that the Polish Episcopal Conference will rise to the occasion also this time. Let’s show that we support our Shepherds! READ MORE HERE and HERE
REMNANT COMMENT: One wonders when the world will start paying attention to the fact that something is happening in Poland. It's difficult to understand the various factions and who's who and what's what , of course, but what is clear is that Catholic Poland is rising, that Catholic Poles have had enough of the EU and maybe, just maybe, enough of the Church of Accompaniment. Please, God, watch over and protect our Polish brothers and sisters.
