Catholic Action

Cardinal Burke and AB Viganò (LSN Photo) Cardinal Burke and AB Viganò (LSN Photo)

Cardinal Burke has been quite vocal recently in defense of Archbishop Viganò.

LifeSiteNews reports: “The evils he had denounced are of the most serious nature,” said Cardinal Burke, and if true, then “he was obliged in conscience” to release the information as he did.

“The law of God in these matters is higher than, for example, the pontifical secret,” Burke said.

And in a recent interview with The Wanderer: “We ought to take very seriously all that he has said,” Cardinal Burke stated, as Vigano has said he has evidence to back his claims. “To do otherwise is to be negligent.”

REMNANT COMMENT: While there are some voices of discontent on the Internet sounding off against Cardinal Burke for not doing/saying enough, The Remnant is not numbered among them. While it is almost fashionable these days to take issue with any number of the bizarre utterances and actions of the most delusional pope in history, Cardinal Burke spoke up against Francis at a moment when precious few laymen (and no prelates at all) could muster the intestinal fortitude to say anything at all. He did so with measured restraint and palpable concern for the overall good of the Church.

Since then much has changed. For one thing, two of the four "dubia cardinals" are now dead, and the third is advanced in years. For Cardinal Burke to proceed on his own with the "formal correction" may well seem just Quixotic enough to play into Francis's hands. Solo swinging at windmills is always amusing but rarely poses a serious threat.

And so, the Cardinal continues to fight the good fight in another this most recent case by offering public support for a man many consider Pontificate Enemy Number One. I suspect for a man in his position--with millions watching his every move--this takes more courage than most Monday morning curial quarterbacks can even imagine.

So, let’s slow down, pray and reflect where further impatience with and even criticism of Cardinal Burke is concerned.  He has not gone gently into the night. His opinions on these matters are known to all; his unanswered (by Francis) objections still stand; and his continued measured resistance is of primary concern to liberal prelates from here to Casa Santa Marta. Whether he sought out the distinction or not, he is the de facto leader of hierarchical resistance against Francis.

Just for a moment, let us consider what the situation under Francis might be right now had Raymond Cardinal Burke never taken the historic action that he did. Can you hear the crickets? As it is, the man changed everything and, because he truly is humble, we may never know the full extent of the role he played in Archbishop Vigano’s decision to stand and resist Peter to his face.

I pray for them both and thank God for His mercy—the mercy of not leaving us abandoned sheep without a single shepherd to watch over the Church. In Vigano and Burke (and others now following their lead) we can have confidence that we are not alone.

We call upon all of the princes of the Church who are not complicit in the sex abuse and cover-up scandal to do as Cardinal Burke has done and stand with Viganò.

ICK Assigned to Parish in Hammond, IN

Written by

At the gracious invitation of His Excellency, the Most Reverend Donald J. Hying, Bishop of the Diocese of Gary, Indiana, the Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest will begin a new apostolate at St. Joseph Parish in Hammond, Indiana, starting in mid-November.

The Institute will help to care for the needs of the growing number of faithful in northwestern Indiana who wish to worship according to the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite in the Diocese of Gary and who desire the advantages, both sacramental and pastoral, of such a parish community.

His Excellency, Bishop Hying has proposed the iconic and historical church of St. Joseph in Hammond, Indiana as the new home of the Institute’s new apostolate to the Extraordinary Form. After consulting with the pastor, Fr. Richard Orlinski and the parish community, the Institute will begin its mission in the diocese of Gary on November 11th with a Solemn High Mass at St. Joseph’s Church in Hammond at 11:00am. The Mass will be celebrated by the Provincial Superior, the Rev. Canon Matthew Talarico. Father Richard Orlinski remains Pastor of St. Joseph’s at the present time.

Holy Mass will continue to be celebrated in the Ordinary Form in English on Saturdays at 4:30pm and on Sundays at 9:00am. The Institute is nominating Canon Glenn Gardner to be appointed by Bishop Hying as rector of the new apostolate at Saint Joseph’s and eventually parish administrator at a later time. Canon Gardner will be available to care for everyone’s spiritual needs. Thus, he will soon be residing in the St. Joseph rectory.

Beginning Sunday, November 11, Holy Mass in the Extraordinary Form will be offered on Sundays at 11:00 a.m. Daily mass will be offered in the church at 8:00 a.m. Monday through Thursday, as well on Saturday morning. Friday Mass will be offered at 6:00 p.m. Confessions will be available daily 30 minutes before each Mass.

Beginning in January, additional Masses and devotions will be added according to pastoral need. On the First Sunday of Advent, December 2, His Excellency, Bishop Hying will visit Saint Joseph’s. Adoration of the Most Blessed Sacrament will begin at 11:00am ending with Benediction. At 12:00pm, Solemn High Mass in the Extraordinary Form will be celebrated by the Institute’s provincial superior, Canon Matthew Talarico. Bishop Hying will offer the homily. A light reception will follow. Everyone is welcome!

The Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest would like to extend its heartfelt thanks to Bishop Hying, Fr. Orlinksi, the pastor of St. Joseph parish and the whole parish community for the opportunity to serve the Church in northwestern Indiana and to call the beautiful St. Joseph’s church our new home. Together let us all pray to St. Joseph for his help and guidance.

Jair Bolsonaro Jair Bolsonaro

Way to go, Brazil! For electing a president with the campaign slogan: “Brazil before everything, and God above all.”

Yes, this actually happened in 2018! The backlash against the left has gained such momentum that Jair Bolsanaro, the outspoken, rough-around-the-edges theocrat who has been called a misogynist, homophobe, and racist—who was stabbed in the gut during his campaign by a far-left activist—won the presidential election with over 55% of the vote.

Bolsonaro won against leftist candidate Fernando Haddad with a market-friendly, tough-on-crime platform that resonated with a population disillusioned with political corruption and increasing insecurity.

During his campaign he promised: “We cannot continue flirting with socialism, communism, populism and leftist extremism … We are going to change the destiny of Brazil.”

He also suggests literally smacking some sense into a son who is beginning to act “sort of gay”.

Little wonder why the far-Left in the U.S. are on the violent warpath against President Donald J. Trump and his supporters.  His nationalist populism is contagious and, like him or not, President Trump has proven to the world that patriotic and Godly people can still profoundly impact elections.

And, let's face it, the far-Left is clearly out of ideas. Their hackneyed socialism has grown tired and transparently self-serving. Their slogans are just that—slogans. They're racist, Christophobic, angry and desperate and, as such, can do little to push their destructive agenda beyond inciting mob violence and resorting to the strong-arm tactics of bullying and intimidation.

God bless President Bolsanaro! Perhaps now and at long last, Christ the Redeemer—one of the largest statues of Christ in the world—will begin again to remind the people of Brazil of whence they’ve come and to where they must return.

This video of workers repairing Christ the Redeemer (after it was recently struck by lightning) in Rio shows how truly awesome the statue is and how profound the faith of the pre-conciliar Catholics of Brazil must have been to erect such a monument of fidelity to Christ.  May He rule again in the hearts and minds of the people of Brazil.

NOTE: this is a Google translation of an article from the Vatican Magazine, November 2018 and thus may have some grammatical errors.

To learn that sexual abuse and homosexuality are almost epidemic among clergy and even in the hierarchy of the Church in America, Australia and Europe, shakes the current Church to its foundations, not to say that it has even fallen in a sort of shock state.

Finland’s Pro-Life Hero: Timo Soini

Written by
Foreign Minister Timo Soini Foreign Minister Timo Soini

Paraphrasing the well-known sentence in the Gospel "Nazareth! Can anything good come from there?" (John 1:46), can anything good for the pro-life cause come from Finland? Certainly, if we consider what happened on September 21st, 2018, when its foreign minister, Catholic Timo Soini, won a 100–60 confidence vote in the Finnish parliament against a motion of no confidence brought against him due to his pro-life and anti-abortion views which, in the opinion of his adversaries, were to have made him unfit to retain his office.

This vote was but the latest stage of a controversy which erupted on May 30, 2018, when the tabloid daily Iltalehti reported that Soini had participated in an anti-abortion march, or perhaps more precisely a March for Life anti-abortion rally of 15,000 people, in Ottawa, Canada, on May 11th, 2018, while on an official trip to represent Finland at Arctic Council meetings there.

VATICAN CITY (AP) — Pope Francis has wrapped up a monthlong meeting of bishops dedicated to young people by saying the Catholic Church is being "persecuted" and "dirtied" by accusations — an apparent reference to the clergy sex abuse and cover-up scandal.

Francis acknowledged Saturday that there were sinners in the church. But he insisted that the church itself is holy and must be protected from attacks and "another type of persecution: continuous accusations to dirty the church."

Pro-Life Russian "Propaganda" Saves Babies' Lives!

Good news for a change! According to, the number of abortions in Russia has dropped by nearly two-thirds since 2000.

In 2000, there were 2,138,000 recorded abortions in Russia, and in 2017—779,999.

“That’s a very serious decline—63.5%,” Deputy Prime Minister Tatiana Golikova noted.

Moreover, the number of Russians who condemn abortion has tripled in 20 years, from 12 to 35%.

REMNANT COMMENT: Maybe all this has something to do with all this...

To all those who'll now predictably jump to dismiss this as a lot of propagandistic rot, let me just add this: I. Don't. Care!

If Christian symbolism has become powerful enough in Russia to induce the state to exploit it for political gain, I say: Slava Bogu!

If even a century of atheism has failed to tear out Mother Russia's Christian soul to such an extent that pretending to be Christian now wins elections over there, I say: Slava Bogu!

If Putin believes that posing as a Christian will cause him to be more beloved by his people and more feared by the brainless, soulless, heartless walking dead of the New World Order amassing on his borders, I say Slava Bogu!

A world drunk on atheistic secularism desperately needs the example of political leaders at the very least going through the motions of believing in God...even if it is nothing more than window dressing. Everybody wins, and we'll just have to wait for history to tell us if Putin really meant it or not. I hope and pray that he does. But even if he doesn't: Bring it on, Vlad, and Slava Bogu!

In this next print/e-edition of The Remnant, Michael Matt consults The Remnant archives, considers what was being said about the "Lefebvre Question" and Masonic infiltration back in 1976, and then asks the question:

"Quite obviously, Archbishop Lefebvre's stand has now been justified by history itself. Archbishop Viganò is proving it right now—that for decades, evil and corruption have been allowed to flourish in the hierarchy of the Catholic Church of Vatican II. This is so obviously the case, that one wonders when we get to formally announce the total vindication of Archbishop Lefebvre. In fact, I personally wonder why the Society of St. Pius X has not already done so."

Remnant Editor Calls on Traditionalists Worldwide to Support Viganò

"At this most critical moment in the life of the Church, we call on all traditional Catholics—including the priestly orders of the Society of St. Pius X, the Fraternity of St. Peter and the Institute of Christ the King—to prayerfully consider expressing public solidarity with Archbishop Carlo Maria Viganò since the condition of the Church is now so critical."

Plus, back in 1976 Remnant founding editor spoke to the true nature of the Lefebvre controversy:

"What it is that still lies hidden behind the so-called 'Lefebvre question” is the far more formidable and truly appalling scandal of Masonic infiltration and impenetration of the Church – which, of course, Archbishop Lefebvre himself has repeatedly touched upon and condemned...Archbishop Lefebvre’s position at this point in history will one day be vindicated – whether by a Third Vatican Council or even by this or a future Pope, remains of course to be seen.  It is all in God’s hands."
