Remnant Wins Award from Los Angeles Press Club

The Remnant Newspaper and columnist, Theresa Marie Moreau, placed in the highly-coveted News-Feature Category at the Los Angeles Press Club's 60th Annual Journalism Awards. The event was held yesterday, June 24, 2018, in the Crystal Ballroom, at the historic Biltmore Hotel, in downtown Los Angeles, California. (A news-feature story is written with the strict discipline of hard news, yet with a style that often incorporates literary devices and techniques.)

The winner was Moreau’s recent work, “Persecution and Anti-Catholic Propaganda”, published both in the Remnant Newspaper and online in March, 2018, about which a judge gushed:

An article that takes events in chilling detail from a forgotten time, and makes them relevant in today's world. Great historical insight. Well done!

This is not the first time The Remnant has won the award. Miss Moreau’s story, “With God in China,” published in The Remnant, in April 2009, took home the prize in 2010. At that time, judges wrote: “Her gripping account of life for two Catholic priests in China is superb. She calmly explains the constant political upheaval in China, the awful effects of those changes on Winance and Zhou -- and their unflinching faith -- and finally, how they emerged later with new lives. It’s a history lesson, a faith lesson and a stark recitation of a dark time in history.”

In 2011 Moreau again won with: “They Died in China: 33 Martyrs of Yang Kia Ping,” published in The Remnant, in September and October 2010. About this entry, one judge wrote: “I was drawn into this in-depth series of stories from the opening sentence and couldn’t put it down until I had read every word of every story. That, to me, represents quality writing and reporting, which are hallmarks of exceptional writing.”

Again in 2011, we won for "Enemies of the State," for which judges wrote: "Writer knows her audience and provides well-researched details to paint a riveting tale. Magazine-quality story on an interesting topic."

More recently, The Remnant and Miss Moreau won in 2013, for "A Chinese Handmaid of Christ," for which judges wrote: "Theresa Marie Moreau's compelling story of Cathering Wang, who endured many hardships for clinging to her religion under 1950's Communist China, is a sobering reminder of the intolerance of authoritarian regimes."
