(CNN) Archbishop John C. Nienstedt and a top deputy resigned Monday as the top Catholic officials in St. Paul-Minneapolis, Minnesota, in the wake of criminal sex abuse charges against the archdiocese.In a statement, Nienstedt said he was resigning "to give the Archdiocese a new beginning amidst the many challenges we face."
Auxiliary Bishop Lee Piche also resigned.
The resignations follow the filing of criminal abuse charges against the archdiocese on June 5 and the decision less than a week ago by Pope Francis to approve a new church tribunal to judge bishops who had failed to protect children. Full Story Here
REMNANT COMMENT: It would be nice to be able to report that things here in Minneapolis/St. Paul are exactly as they seem and that everything is on the up and up. Of course this is not so. Archbishop John Nienstedt is hated by the far-Left in this town. Why? Because he has long been one of the most outspoken bishops against homosexual “marriage” in the nation.
Could he have done more to protect children from abusive homosexual and pedophile priests? I have no idea. Perhaps. But few did more to try to protect the family in the state of Minnesota from a ruthless anti-marriage agenda than Bishop Nienstedt.Take from this what you will. And, in the meantime, if you think this forced resignation represents a genuine and long overdue crackdown by the Vatican, think again.
If Pope Francis is the new sheriff in town who's going to right all the wrongs his controversial appointment of the notorious Chilean Bishop Juan Barros is a funny way to show it. Barros, who was personally appointed by the pope, is accused of having been present during the abuse and of shielding the Rev. Fernando Karadima, a charismatic, high-profile Santiago priest — and serial abuser of young boys. This scandal is just getting fired up.
From Minneapolis to Rome, if you think the guys in the white hats are here to save the day—well, you’ll be comforted to know that President Hillary Clinton plans to outlaw abortion and ban gay marriage, too.
