Sister Lucia’s 1957 Interview with Fr. Fuentes: Are We Now Rejecting the Last Means of Salvation?

On December 26, 1957, Fr. Augustin Fuentes (postulator for the causes of beatification of the Fatima seers, Francisco and Jacinta) interviewed Sister Lucia, the eldest Fatima seer. As Fr. Karl Stehlin describes in his Fatima: The Great Secret of Fatima (volume III), the progressive authorities in Rome soon thereafter sought to discredit Fr. Fuentes and his interview, which should give us some indication of its importance today:

“Why then such a strong reaction to this text? First, this text placed Sister Lucia among the prophets of doom whom John XXIII condemned in his speech at the opening of the council. The Pope, therefore, must not have liked what she was saying. Regardless . . . Sr. Lucia revealed certain details of the Third Secret in this interview.”

As we can see from the following excerpts from the interview, Sister Lucia spoke of the great crisis of Faith, which became so clear with Vatican II and in the decades that followed. Even more importantly for us, Sister Lucia’s words from 1957 may be the most vital warning we have about our immediate future.

As bad as the world was in 1957, it is incomparably worse today — we see this everywhere we look.

Dire State of World, in 1957, and Now. “Father, the Most Holy Virgin is very sad because no one has paid any attention to her message, neither the good nor the bad. The good continue on their way but without giving any importance to her message. The bad, not seeing the punishment of God actually falling on them, continue their life of sin without caring about the message. But believe me, Father, God will chastise the world and this will be in a terrible manner. The punishment from Heaven is imminent. . .”

As bad as the world was in 1957, it is incomparably worse today — we see this everywhere we look. We deserve much more punishment today but we are generally oblivious to the need to reform our lives. If punishment from Heaven was imminent in 1957, who can feel great confidence that we will make it through 2022 (or even May) without God chastising the world?

Corruption of Clergy Afflicts Jesus and Mary and Leads to Damnation of Laity. “That which afflicts the Immaculate Heart of Mary and the Heart of Jesus is the fall of religious and priestly souls. The devil knows that religious and priests who fall away from their beautiful vocation drag numerous souls to Hell . . . The devil wishes to take possession of consecrated souls. He tries to corrupt them in order to lull to sleep the souls of laypeople and thereby lead them to final impenitence. Resulting from this is the sterility of the interior life, and among the laypeople, coldness regarding the subject of renouncing pleasures and the total dedication of themselves to God.”

The corruption of the clergy has been on full display for decades, and the closing of churches during the pandemic made it even more evident. Crucially, Sister Lucia identified a little-appreciated consequence of this corruption as it relates to the laity: “coldness regarding the subject of renouncing pleasures and the total dedication of themselves to God.” Do we find it surprising that the Immaculate Heart of Mary and the Heart of Jesus would be afflicted by our coldness in renouncing pleasures and dedicating ourselves totally to God? If so, perhaps this is because, as Sister Lucia indicates, the devil has been successful in corrupting the clergy who should be calling all Catholics to be generous with God. As both a cause and effect of the continual disregard of God and the messages of Our Lady, our shepherds often act as though they would scandalize us if they preached that we must turn to God as saints. Tragically, this is the one message we need desperately today.

She is giving two last remedies to the world. These are the Holy Rosary and Devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. —Sr. Lucia

Three Reasons We are in the Last Times — Reason One. “Father, the Most Holy Virgin did not tell me that we are in the last times of the world but She made me understand this for three reasons. The first reason is because She told me that the devil is in the mood for engaging a decisive battle against the Virgin. And a decisive battle is the final battle where one side will be victorious and the other side will suffer defeat.”

Since Vatican II, and increasingly throughout Francis’s occupation of Rome, we have seen a clear demarcation of the battle lines within the Church. With the introduction of his Pachamama, his direct attacks on traditional Catholicism (i.e., Catholicism) especially in Traditiones Custodes, and the Synod on Synodality, Francis has made it obvious to anyone with eyes to see that one must choose between the legitimate Catholic religion and the diabolical counterfeit religion animated by the Spirit of Vatican II, which has now effectively become the spiritual arm of the New World Order. It seems that we are surely in the midst of the final battle and those who seek to remain neutral are often the greatest tools of the devil in his attack against Mary and her army.

We are in the Last Times — Reason Two. “The second reason is because She is giving two last remedies to the world. These are the Holy Rosary and Devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. These are the last two remedies which signify that there will be no others.”

Later in the interview, Sister Lucia spoke directly of the Rosary:

“Look, Father, the Most Holy Virgin in these last times in which we live has given new efficacy to the recitation of the Rosary to such an extent that there is no problem, no matter how difficult it is, whether temporal or above all, spiritual, in the personal life of each one of us, of our families, of the families of the world, or of the religious communities, or even of the life of peoples and nations, that cannot be solved by the Rosary. With the Rosary, we save ourselves. We will sanctify ourselves. We will console our Lord and obtain the salvation of many souls.”

Those with devotion to the Rosary understand through experience that God has given special efficacy to its recitation. Critics of devotion to Our Lady and the Rosary mistake this key fact that God can decide upon whichever remedies He chooses; and He has chosen the Holy Rosary and Devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. Most people who identify as Catholics make little or no use of these remedies, which means that those who realize their importance are called to make the best possible use of them.

God always, before He is about to chastise the world, exhausts all the remedies. —Sr. Lucia

We are in the Last Times — Reason Three. “The third reason is because in the plans of Divine Providence, God always, before He is about to chastise the world, exhausts all the remedies. Now, when He sees that the world pays no attention whatsoever then, as we say in our imperfect manner of speaking, He offers us with certain trepidation, the last means of salvation, His Most Holy Mother. It is with certain trepidation because if we despise and repulse this ultimate means we will not have any more forgiveness from Heaven because we will have committed a sin which the Gospel calls the sin against the Holy Spirit. The sin consists in openly rejecting with full knowledge and consent, the salvation which He offers.”

Since Francis welcomed his Pachamama into Rome, God has allowed it to become more clear than ever that the wicked forces of the world have openly banded together against Him and those who seek to do His will. The vast majority of people see that something is wrong, but are generally content to do what they are told so long as they have their bread and circuses. God has also allowed us to see that help is not on the way, no matter how well we do in the next election or how many truthful tweets Elon Musk will allow once he controls Twitter — secular victories are only useful insofar as they buy us a little more time before the wicked rulers of the world have all the control they need to push us into our cages.

God is allowing us to see that the only way out is to make use of the last means of salvation, His Most Holy Mother. And the more clear it is that we must turn to God through Mary, the more culpable we are for failing to do so. As Sister Lucia indicated, we are close to the point at which we are "openly rejecting with full knowledge and consent, the salvation which He offers.” Thus, turning to God through Mary now, with a desire to become saints, is not simply one good thing to do among many, it is the one thing necessary. If we do that, God will provide the rest. If we do not, no amount of political success will help us.

Nor should we wait for the call to penance to come from our bishops in our diocese, nor from the religious congregations. No! —Sr. Lucia

The Great Need for Penance. “My mission is to indicate to everyone the imminent danger we are in of losing our souls for all eternity if we remain obstinately in sin. Father, we should not wait for the call of the Holy Father to do penance. Nor should we wait for the call to penance to come from our bishops in our diocese, nor from the religious congregations. No! Our Lord has already very often used these means and the world has paid no attention. That is why now, it is necessary for each one of us to begin to reform himself spiritually. Each person must not only save his own soul but also all the souls God has placed in our path.”

With Vatican II came a marked decrease in penitential practices among Catholics following the Novus Ordo. As our appreciation for our Faith should tell us, with the lack of penance comes an increase in sin, which requires even more penance. As a result, we are in a spiritual death spiral and each of us must awaken to the need to turn to God: “it is necessary for each one of us to begin to reform himself spiritually.” The fact that we may not hear this call to sanctity from our shepherds should be an even greater reason to do all we can to become saints.

Russia as Instrument of Chastisement. “Tell them Father, that many times the Most Holy Virgin told my cousins Francisco and Jacinta, as well as me, that many nations will disappear from the face of the earth. She said that Russia will be the instrument of chastisement chosen by Heaven to punish the whole world if we do not obtain the conversion of that poor nation beforehand . . .”

Regardless of our thoughts on Russia and Ukraine, it appears that we are closer than ever to a situation in which Russia will be “the instrument of chastisement chosen by Heaven to punish the whole world.” Everything is in place for the great chastisement if men will not turn to God as saints.

Bishops and priests should preach this from the rooftops. But even if they do not, we who know it in our Catholic hearts should beg the Blessed Virgin Mary to intercede for us so that we may become worthy of the promises of Christ.

With whatever remaining time we have, we must reform our lives and act as though everything depended upon our becoming saints. As Fr. Stehlin wrote, Our Lady is the Mother of Mercy who will hear us if only we cry to her:

“Imagine a child that has been very bad and vicious and perhaps has committed many crimes and is rejected by the whole world; would his mother, if she was a good mother, ever disown her child? Wouldn’t she beg God all her life long for his conversion, like St. Monica did for her son St. Augustine? And at the slightest sign of remorse in the child, wouldn’t she hasten to demonstrate her motherly love for him? And if the child in his despair cried, ‘Mother,’ could her heart ever manage to remain deaf to such a cry for help? Who would ever be afraid to go to his mother? Here, though, we have not just any mother, but rather the best of all mothers, whose very nature it is to be the Mother of Mercy.”

God has allowed us to see so clearly now that we desperately need our loving Mother of Mercy. Bishops and priests should preach this from the rooftops. But even if they do not, we who know it in our Catholic hearts should beg the Blessed Virgin Mary to intercede for us so that we may become worthy of the promises of Christ. We must do that now, for tomorrow may be too late. Queen of the Most Holy Rosary, pray for us!
