Lift Your Eyes to the Mountains
America Has a New President

(www.RemnantNewspaper.com) America has a new president. So be it! God Who is still in His heaven has allowed even this to come to pass. All power on earth is given by Him, and we receive the leaders we deserve. We pray for President-elect Barack Obama.  We pray especially that he will not make good on half of his campaign promises.

On the other hand, let’s not forget that for the past seven years the policies of the neoconservatives (Neocons) and the Bush Administration have left many of us deeply concerned about the direction in which our country is heading. The Patriot Act, the Military Commissions Act of 2006, the invasion of Iraq, wire tapping, torture of prisoners—all of it has not only left many good Americans angry but also brought on a sharp decline in America’s standing abroad.

The big losers in this election, it seems to us, are the Neocons whose agenda was so un-American according to conservatives and liberals alike that even Barack Obama's 'change' resonated.

I don’t think we can blame Obama for what is at least in part a legitimate electoral reaction against the policies of George Bush, who, while doing some honorable things for this country, nevertheless allowed himself to fall into the Neocon snare to such an extent that it became inevitable many Americans would vote as they now have. This election was a protest vote against our invasion of Iraq and the disastrous empire building that the Neocons convinced George Bush was a good idea. President Bush is not an evil man, but he allowed himself to become the puppet of those who are certainly not pro-life, pro-family or even particularly pro-American. Last night, the chickens came home to roost.

Over the past few months, these same Neocons turned on John McCain for one reason and one reason only—Sarah Palin, the pro-life hockey mom who nearly pulled off the impossible for the Republicans.  The politically savvy McCain was quite right to believe that, given the odds and the low approval numbers of President Bush, he had a better chance of riding to the White House on the backs of pro-life Christians than on the Neocons and their globalist agenda. Thus his pro-life running mate.  We thanked him for it. The Neocons crucified him for it.

David Frum, writer of President Bush’s infamous ‘axis of evil’ speech, is just one example of how the Neocons mutinied against McCain because of his choice of VP.  Frum spent the weeks leading up to the election on the talk show circuit lambasting McCain for tapping the ‘semi-literate,’ ‘unqualified’, ‘unsophisticated’ (read: 'pro-life') Governor Sarah Palin. Thanks a lot, Mr. Neocon!

The real culprits here are a conveniently timed economic meltdown and the Neocons, and we can only hope that the 2008 Republican presidential fiasco will mean the nation has heard the last from the insufferable Neocons.

Still, many good people placed a higher emphasis on the life and family issues than on the erosion of their civil liberties and an exceedingly problematic foreign policy. Thus, we at The Remnant offered highly conditional support for a McCain/Palin ticket which promised to make life and family issues a priority.  This is not to say we deceived ourselves into thinking John McCain was some modern-day Charlemagne.  As is the case with faithful Catholics worldwide these days, we hadn't a horse of our own in this race. We could only do our best under the circumstances to defend the American family and the unborn, and we stand by our decision. But this is a moot point now, as all tradition-minded Catholics must come together to circle the wagons for our good and the good of the country.

We must renew our vow to do what Catholics have always done in times like these—keep the Faith and outlast the regime. This one—like that of the Caesars, the Vikings, the Moors, Napoleon, Elizabeth I, Hitler and Stalin—will come to an end in good time, and the Church will, of course, remain standing as she always has. President Obama will inherit a national depression, two foreign wars and a country severely divided along the lines of age, morality and race. We will have ample time to mobilize and unite.

For us, the strategy remains unchanged: keep the Faith. As history demonstrates again and again keeping the Faith is the guaranteed way to defeat the enemies of Christ who for millennia have labored to destroy everything in which we believe. Way back when, they entertained themselves by throwing our ancient forefathers to the lions, only to eventually lose and lose big. Today they fancy themselves so close to victory they can taste it. But the Devil knows his history, which is why they are so afraid of us still that they would enact federal legislation to silence us, declare our Scriptures ‘hate literature’, and drag our priests before ‘human rights tribunals’…merely for parroting ‘medieval superstitions’. To the right and to the left we are all pawns in a chess game between Christ and Antichrist as old as history itself—it’s that simple and it’s just that ‘unenlightened’.

In The Great Heresies, one of the greatest minds of the last century, Hilaire Belloc, put it this way:

The quarrel is between the Church and the anti-Church—the Church of God and anti-God, the Church of Christ and anti-Christ...“The Modern Attack” or “anti-Christ” it is all one; there is a clear issue now joined between the retention of Catholic morals, tradition, and authority on the one side, and the active effort to destroy them on the other. The modern attack will not tolerate us. It will attempt to destroy us. Nor can we tolerate it. We must attempt to destroy it as being the fully equipped and ardent enemy of the Truth by which men live. The duel is to the death.

For us here at The Remnant we pledge to fight in the light for as long as the new regime allows us to keep our doors open. And when they begin shutting down newspapers (as is always inevitable with them), with God’s help we will find other ways to stay in this ‘duel to the death’.

Besides, there is a silver lining to all of this. Never in our lives have we seen such a united front against evil as that which formed during the run-up to the 2008 presidential election. Pro-life and pro-family forces all across America established an alliance not soon to be broken.  All of a sudden Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity and The Remnant, though ideologically at odds, nevertheless find ourselves facing the very same common enemy. The reestablishment of the Fairness Doctrine will lead to strange bedfellows indeed.  There will be a fight, and this is far from over.

Even the American bishops stirred themselves into action, thanks be to God.  Real heroes have arisen from the ranks of the episcopate, which, for the faithful Catholic, provides tremendous hope. We must pray for those bishops. With God’s help, they will lead us out of this darkness.

None of us is alone, and many are beginning to realize that the Rosary and the Mass stand as the hope of the whole world. The restoration of Catholic identity through the restoration of the Latin Mass has already begun in earnest all across this land, and it is making a significant difference spiritually and strategically. At the end of the day, it is the breakdown of the Catholic Church which has brought our country to this strange place.  We must pray, then, for the restoration of the Church, and involve ourselves not necessarily in politics per se but in the real work of saving the world by bringing the Catholic Church back to her senses. This becomes Priority Number One!

God has not abandoned us. The widespread and blatant Christophobia all around today—a virtual hallmark of ‘enlightened’ secular society—can be spawned only in hell itself. And as any child knows if there is hell then there is heaven. If the Devil is then God must be. By their desperate war against God, Satan’s legions have inadvertently managed to do better than Thomas Aquinas—they’ve proved the existence of God beyond any shadow of doubt. After all, they’re at war with Him!

The pioneers of the traditional Catholic movement warned the world forty years ago that without Catholic Tradition and the ancient Roman Rite of Mass, our Church would lose its identity, our State would lose its moral compass, and our civilization would initiate a freefall into hell. Well, wake up and smell the sulfur! But the Church is divine, which is why with every church they close, every priest they persecute, every Christian they prosecute, every baby they slaughter—thousands will begin to rely less on faith and more on the absolute fact that there is only one God and that all the powers of hell are concentrating their efforts on a last desperate effort: the destruction of His One, Holy Catholic Church!

The Catholic Church is all that matters to us and, at the end of the day, to them! And it’s becoming increasingly obvious that the Church is slowly beginning to rise from its own ashes. In some ways, it required the prospect of President Barack Obama to wake the Church here in America from its stupor.  Finally, it would seem, the 1960’s are over!

Regardless of what happens now we know that the Church can never die. The gates of hell can never prevail. If this restoration continues (and we have Christ’s promise that it inevitably will), then the New World Order is on the eve of destruction while the Bride of Christ stands at the door not of defeat but of total victory. All that is asked of us is that we keep the Faith and endure this short period of persecution in the last few (but perhaps darkest) hours before the dawn.

The game is afoot, then. Gaudete!

I have lifted up my eyes to the mountains, from whence help shall come to me.  My help is from the Lord, who made heaven and earth. May he not suffer thy foot to be moved: neither let him slumber that keepeth thee.  Behold he shall neither slumber nor sleep, that keepeth Israel.  The Lord is thy keeper, the Lord is thy protection upon thy right hand. The sun shall not burn thee by day: nor the moon by night.  The Lord keepeth thee from all evil: may the Lord keep thy soul.  May the Lord keep thy going in and thy going out; from henceforth now and for ever.
